the label

Established in 2020, our non-profit music label specializes in making music for social impact. We aim to shift power in the music industry toward artists whose stories have been historically excluded from popular culture.

From our studio in San José, Costa Rica, we provide label services to new Latin artists based anywhere under nonprofit contracts, and work with established artists to engage their audiences in social issues through high-impact partnerships with visionary social movements.

why we exist

We believe in music’s unmatched power to shape culture. Yet the artists who dominate global charts represent only a narrow slice of humanity. Women make up barely a third of charting artists, while disabled, Indigenous, migrant, and gender-diverse creators remain largely invisible in mainstream music.

When entire communities are missing from the stories we hear most often, they are also less visible in our culture. If the voices shaping global music reflected the diversity of the world itself, we wouldn’t just get better music, we’d get a more equitable culture.

how we’re funded

We Could Be Music is a nonprofit foundation based in Costa Rica with a 501(c)(3) fiscal sponsor in the United States, making donations to our work tax-deductible. Our work is funded through philanthropic donations, foundation grants, co-financed music projects, and creative services for mission-aligned organizations.

Our partners have included Amnesty International, the United Nations, Ekō.org, the U.S. Embassy in San José, Global & Collective, the Quantum Leap Foundation, and many others.
